One Little Word 2017: Discipline

One Little Word

Are you ready for 2017? I sure am! I chose to participate in 2017’s One Little Word “– a word to focus on, meditate on, and reflect upon as I go about my daily life.”

My one little word had to be something that encompassed all I wanted to accomplish. I asked myself what my biggest need in my personal growth category was and needed a word that described how I felt like I didn’t finish anything I started. I needed a work that wrapped all my 2017 goals into one word!

  • Continue to grow my business
  • Visit 2 new countries
  • Read 30 books
  • Retirement savings plan
  • Attend a Delight & Be retreat
  • 1 year bible
  • Grow more patient
  • Spanish practice
  • Black diamond skiing!
  • Grad School applications
  • Exercise Routine
  • Donate monthly to charities

I spent about a week looking through different words to focus on (stable, consistency, focus, patience, justice) but eventually chose DISCIPLINE.

I struggle with discipline and follow through. I get big ideas and make big plans, then they fall short when the mood passes me and I lose motivation to continue toward that goal. This happens over and over again: healthy plans fall flat, schedules fall through, and I’m left lost!

By focusing on discipline and creating mindful, controlled, and habitual actions in my life, I hope to bring new light onto my goals and follow through on things that important to me. How different would life be if I had the discipline to spend time in prayer and the Word everyday? What if I followed through on my plans? How would I be changed if I stayed committed to my health goals?

In 2017, I hope to specifically invest into the areas related to discipline in my faith (Bible time and tithes), discipline in my schooling and work (grad school apps and reading), discipline with my health regimen (exercise routine, skiing, and orientation towards physical health), and discipline for my personal growth (Spanish practice, travel). I also plan to focus on choosing to be disciplined in things that match my long term goals, pruning things out that don’t fit with the life I want and the way I want to feel.

I am so excited for this year. I know things are going to change in big ways for me, and I can’t wait to see what God does through it all.

Lord, I invite you into my heart and my habits to mold me into who I’m supposed to be. I pray that you teach me to do things in controlled and habitual ways, finding joy in consistency and leaving room for spontaneity.
