DIY Modern Yarn Hanging

DIY Yarn Hanging

With fall coming and the influx of autumnal decorations, I wanted something to add a little bit of autumn flair. To me, nothing says fall like wooly mittens and pumpkin orange! I have absolutely loved finding new and interesting (and thrifty) pieces to spice up my space. This easy peasy DIY Yarn Hanging took about an hour to make and only cost $8.50 – yes, you read that right!

Materials needed:

  • Yarn of different colors (I used Rust, white, and Oatmeal from the Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice Yarn Collection)
Cost on sale: $2.50 per skein, originally $4
  • Wooden dowel (I used 36 inches long with 7/16ths width)
    Cost: $1

Let’s get started on your DIY Yarn Hanging!

1. Decide on your design.

Get creative with it! There are so many options – seriously! You can use a branch as your dowel, different fabrics for your decorations, or try an asymmetrical look. I wanted something fairly minimalist and versatile so I went with three colors rising to the edges from the middle of the dowel. There are tons of inspiration pieces on Pinterest to look at!

2. Start in the middle and work your way out.
This is the fun part! you can either tie individually like I did, or you can tie in groups. The individuals definitely take a lot longer plus tying in groups can add more texture! TIP: I recommend cutting a little bit longer than you think you’ll need. It’s a lot easy to take yarn away than it is to add it

3. Simply tie, tie, and tie some more.

Get you a cup of coffee and a good movie and get ready to hang out for a bit.

4. Trim the edges and hang

This is the fun part – installing your new art piece! I used some leftover yarn to hang my piece, but you can also use wise or fishing line if you’re looking for a more subtle look. You honestly don’t even have to trim the edges if you don’t want to!
